Terms commonly used in adoption.

Adoption language can be confusing at first, and it varies from person to person. I’ll lay out some of the most common for you with some explanation.

Titles of people – 

Adoptee/Adopted person – A person who was adopted at some point in their lives.

Former Foster Youth – A person who was in foster care at some point in their lives. They could have been reunified, adopted, or aged out of the system.

First/Birth/Natural parent – A person who has a biological child that they have been separated from by adoption. The terminology used varies from person to person.

Adoptive Parent – A person who has adopted a child.

Prospective adoptive parent – A person hoping to adopt a child.

Foster parent – A caregiver to a child in foster care.
